SHE'S GOT CLAWS - EVERYTHING ENDS TO BEGIN

ARTIST : VOLTAGE POETRY PROJECT

ALBUM : HOME SOUNDS

RELEASED : 4th OCTOBER 2024

Solo artist, Keith Harrison aka Voltage Poetry Project, presents us with his debut album ‘Home Sounds’, released via monochrome motif, it is a celebration of human togetherness. Each song draws on happenings in places that can be reached, if travelling by train from London, via either St. Pancras or the immediately adjacent King’s Cross station. Sand dunes, funicular carriages, tenement-skirted parks and a brutalist bookshop are among the locations.

Keith adds: “I’m only from the South East as my parents moved here from Scotland - and their backgrounds included further locations - so the idea of home, for me, isn’t necessarily about a single place. It’s more about a sense of belonging, with particular communities of interest, friends or family - though I admit to often noticing the geography where this togetherness, whether it involves thousands of people or just one or two, is felt. To be able to share this view of things, through a set of songs, is a bit of an honour. That said, I know some folk just like to whistle or hum my tunes, and that’s equally special."

Revival Synth :  This debut album, "Home Sounds," is nothing short of aural poetry, intricately woven with the textures of lo-fi electronica and the stirring essence of geographical music. This album is more than just a collection of tracks; it's a personal journey that invites listeners to explore the uncharted territories of connection and identity.

From the opening notes of "Who Expected Alexanderplatz," we're plunged into a landscape filled with warmth and nostalgia. The gentle synth pads coupled with rhythmic chimes evoke memories of distant shores and sunlit afternoons. It’s a soundscape that feels both intimate and expansive, as if Keith Harrison found inspiration in moments spent alone—perhaps gazing at the ocean or wandering through bustling streets—and transformed them into urgent, crystalline melodies.

The standout track, "The Sight Of Your Smile," masterfully blends gentle vocal samples with ambient beats, crafting a sound that captures the very heartbeat of unity across distances. It's this fusion of geographical sounds, like subtle interviews from different cultures interlaced with soft basslines, that showcases the artists commitment to bringing people together through music. Listening feels like sharing a moment with someone across the globe, even if you've never met.

Lyrically, Voltage Poetry Project doesn’t shy away from touching on themes of solitude and belonging; each verse dances delicately around the challenges of disconnect yet expresses hope for togetherness. His delivery is tuneful yet casual, reminiscent of confiding in a close friend while lounging under starlit skies. Songs like “Association” resonate deeply, inviting listeners to think about their own journeys and the places that feel like home.

While the production shines with lo-fi charm, it's this rawness that makes "Home Sounds" truly meaningful. It has imperfections that musicianship often glosses over, but it’s these very traits that give the album its authenticity. Every crackle and pop tells a story, grounding the music deeper in its human experience.

Perhaps the only weakness is the album's pacing; some tracks beg for a few minutes longer to fully explore their landscapes. But this minor flaw hardly detracts from the beauty of this album. Overall, this is a well crafted debut album that brilliantly marries emotion and innovation. It’s a heartfelt invitation to discover the world—both outside and within.

In a climate where artists often blur geographical lines, Voltage Poetry Project effortlessly reminds us of the power of exposure and empathy, leaving us anxious for what lies ahead in his musical journey. One thing is for certain: I’m now a lifelong fan eager to see where his wanderlust spirit takes us next.
